Ceasefire
NJ, the Garden State's oldest and most important organization devoted to
reducing gun violence, today announced its endorsement of Sen. Frank R.
Lautenberg (D-NJ) for re-election.
"Ceasefire NJ
takes great pride in endorsing Senator Lautenberg, the single federal
legislator who has done more than any other to protect the public from the
scourge of gun violence. Senator Lautenberg is the one federal office
holder who refuses to fear the gun lobby. He has always stood up to its
money and lies and demanded that communities be made safer. We are lucky
to have him in the Garden State," said Bryan Miller, Executive
Director of Ceasefire NJ.
Miller noted candidates
endorsed by Ceasefire NJ have vowed to:
- Vote
against legislation to diminish NJ's gun laws by allowing residents to
purchase handguns out-of-state;
- Vote
against legislation to make permanent and expand prohibitions on public
and law enforcement access to information on gun traces and flows;
- Vote
for a bill to require the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and
Explosives (ATF) to publish annual reports on gun traces and illegal gun
flows;
- Introduce
legislation modeled on NJ's Assault Weapons Ban, to prohibit the sale and
possession of semiautomatic assault guns;
- Vote
against the so-called 'Second Amendment Enforcement Act,' which would
remove the rights of the citizens of Washington, D.C. to enact and enforce
their own gun laws; and
- Vote
for a bill to require federal background checks on all firearm purchases
at gun shows.
