National Farmers Union PAC Endorses Lautenberg for Re-Election

The National Farmers Union Political Action Committee (NATFARMPAC) recently announced its endorsement of Sen. Frank R. Lautenberg (D-NJ) for re-election, citing his years of work and support on behalf of farmers in New Jersey and across the country.

"National Farmers Union Political Action Committee supports candidates who are committed to ensuring that the public policy needs of family farmers, ranchers and the communities in which they live are addressed.  Senator Lautenberg understands the important role rural America can play in reducing our dependence on foreign oil by promoting the increased use of renewable fuels from the farm," said Tom Buis, Chairman of the National Farmers Union Political Action Committee.

"I have always been proud to stand strong with our farmers across New Jersey, so I am honored to have the support of the National Farmers Union. Our farmers make up such a vital part of our economy and we count on them to bring healthy foods to our tables and renewable energy to our vehicles and our homes. I will continue to fight to make sure our farmers have the support and assistance they need to continue to grow their crops," said Sen. Lautenberg.

Sen. Lautenberg recently successfully petitioned the Secretary of Agriculture to declare several counties in New Jersey a disaster area, due to adverse weather.  This designation will bring needed federal funds to New Jersey's farmers.

Sen. Lautenberg also co-sponsored legislation -- the Specialty Crops Competition Act of 2007 -- to provide needed federal grant money to growers of fruits and vegetables, known as "specialty crops."  The Senator also supported the 2008 Farm Bill which was signed into law. The measure re-vitalizes the safety net provided to farmers, provides direct grants to states to help support local agriculture and takes numerous steps to help keep food affordable.

The National Farmers Union (NFU) was founded in 1902 and has a membership of 250,000 farm and ranch families across the country.  NFU's mission is to protect and enhance the economic well-being and quality of life for family farmers, ranchers and their rural communities.
