The term “donut hole” took on a whole new meaning when George Bush and Republicans in Congress left a huge gap in the Medicare “Part D” Drug Program. As a result of this gap, many people on the Medicare drug plan would see their coverage suddenly stop after several months, yet would still be required to pay their monthly insurance premiums. Senator Lautenberg’s “Medicare Part D Coverage Gap Elimination Act of 2006” would close this gap in prescription drug coverage and provide uninterrupted coverage for seniors.
