New Jersey Transportation
Senator Lautenberg is New Jersey’s transportation champion. In fight after fight, he won increased federal support for New Jersey highways and railways, airways and waterways.
Just look around-- roads and mass transit are critical to New Jersey’s quality of life. That’s why Senator Lautenberg has successfully fought for more federal money to make New Jersey public transportation affordable and accessible. And he has worked to make our roads, trains, buses and airlines safer.
Senator Lautenberg's Record
Trans-Hudson Rail Tunnel Project becoming a reality:
In an effort to relieve transit congestion and improve New Jersey’s economy, Senator Lautenberg has already secured over $100 million in federal funds for the Trans-Hudson Rail Tunnel Project. This new rail tunnel connecting New Jersey and Manhattan is expected to take 35,000 vehicles off our roadways every day, create 44,000 permanent jobs and generate $5 billion in economic growth for New Jersey.
Lautenberg Amtrak Bill on the Right Track:
Senator Lautenberg’s bipartisan legislation to revitalize Amtrak has passed both the House and Senate. This plan provides billions in federal funds for Amtrak improvements including enhanced security, new on-time service standards, and stable funding that would help avoid budget gaps. The bill would also provide critical funds to improve New Jersey’s Northeast Corridor rail line.
Lautenberg secures millions of dollars for New Jersey transportation:
Senator Lautenberg’s commitment to improving New Jersey’s infrastructure has led to an increase of up to 50 percent in federal dollars for New Jersey transit and a 30 percent increase in highway funding for New Jersey.
Lautenberg calls for FAA to Reduce Air Noise over New Jersey:
Senator Lautenberg is challenging the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) plans to increase air traffic over New Jersey and Pennsylvania – a move that would negatively affect more than 300,000 New Jerseyans. Senator Lautenberg’s efforts have forced the FAA to hold more public hearings to allow communities that will be affected to voice their concerns directly to the FAA.
Lautenberg curbs the use of “killer” trailer trucks:
Senator Lautenberg successfully led the fight to ban triple trailer trucks from the nation’s highways. The trucks, which can be as large as 10-story buildings, not only presented dangerous road conditions for our drivers, but also damaged our infrastructure. The trucking industry has since backed down and no longer uses these dangerous trucks.
Lautenberg law bans airline smoking:
Senator Lautenberg authored the law that banned smoking on commercial airlines- now you don’t have to sit on a long plane flight and breathe in second hand smoke. His landmark victory helped set the early stage for a nationwide anti-smoking campaign that has since grown into a larger effort to stem the influence of the tobacco industry on our society- saving lives.
Lautenberg stands up to the liquor industry to combat drunk driving:
Our roads became safer the day Senator Lautenberg’s landmark drunk driving bill was signed into law in 2000 by President Clinton. The law requires that all states establish a minimum threshold for drunk driving of .08 blood alcohol content in order to receive federal transportation funds. Senator Lautenberg also established the national 21-year-old drinking law, helping save thousands of lives and preventing many more injuries.
