Making a Difference on Education

By standing strong to make college more affordable and school buildings a better learning environment, Senator Lautenberg is making a real difference for New Jersey’s students.

Senator Lautenberg knows firsthand about the struggle to get a good education. His family was poor; he worked through high school and went to college on the GI Bill. Those opportunities helped him succeed and he believes similar opportunities need to be preserved for our youth today. For Senator Lautenberg, access to education unlocks the American Dream for everyone.

Senator Lautenberg's Record

Lautenberg seeks full education funding
Senator Lautenberg benefited from a public education and he wants to make sure our children make the most out of a public education also. That’s why as a member of the Education funding subcommittee in the Senate, he helped defeat inadequate education funding proposed by former President Bush. Senator Lautenberg will continue to work to increase education funding and foster quality programs that will enhance our public schools.

Increasing Pell Grants and College Financial Aid
With college tuition skyrocketing, Senator Lautenberg strongly supports efforts to boost Pell Grants and other financial aid for higher education, extend student loan forgiveness for students who enter public service, and preserve college tuition tax credits.

Lautenberg law makes schools safer
Keeping kids safe from harmful, cancer-causing substances, Senator Lautenberg wrote laws to help remove asbestos threats from our schools and environment. He also called upon the FDA and CDC to expand testing and monitoring of NJ children and families exposed to mercury, and introduced legislation to limit pesticide and harmful chemical use in school buildings and on school grounds.
