Senator Lautenberg strongly disapproves of President Bush's handling of the Iraq War and, just as strongly, supports our troops.
Senator Lautenberg is taking a hard line against the Bush Administration’s handling of the war in Iraq by calling on the President to get our troops home safely and soon. He’s leading the fight for a phased withdrawal coupled with clear political, military and diplomatic benchmarks to bring about the assumption of control and responsibility by the Iraqi government. And as a veteran himself, Senator Lautenberg knows the Iraq War has taken its toll not only on our soldiers, but on their families and friends back home as well.
Lautenberg: We Must Bring Our Troops Home from Iraq
Senator Lautenberg supports a timetable for US troop withdrawal from Iraq. He supports leaving key resources behind to train the Iraqi Security Forces and to help combat terrorist groups.
Lautenberg: Troops in Iraq need support and funding
Senator Lautenberg supports ending the war in Iraq and getting our troops back home safely and soon. But while they are in Iraq, Senator Lautenberg is working to make sure the troops get the equipment they need. In addition to his law requiring the government to reimburse the family of servicemen and women for the cost of body armor and other equipment, Senator Lautenberg has strongly supported several measures to make the quality of life better for our troops:
- Providing funding for up-armored humvees and body armor for our soldiers.
- Funding new vehicles that protect personnel from roadside bombs.
- Pay raises for active troops and increases in Imminent Danger Pay (formerly known as "combat pay") and increases for the Family Separation Allowance.
- Requiring the Secretary of Defense to inspect military medical treatment facilities and housing.
