It’s been a while since I’ve emailed you, but I wanted to update you in the wake of the debt ceiling battle in Washington. Your support makes it possible for me to continue my fight in the Senate on behalf of working families and against this new wave of Tea Party extremists in Congress.

Homeland Security and Combating Terrorism

Senator Lautenberg stands strong so that countries that sponsor terrorism are held accountable. That’s why he helped write and pass the landmark law banning foreign aid to states sponsoring terrorism. This summer, Senator Lautenberg was successful in pressuring Libya to compensate New Jersey victims of its past terror acts. He’s also working to close loopholes that allow companies to do business with nations that support terrorist activities.

On Homeland Security funding, Senator Lautenberg is standing up to rural state Senators to make sure that these critical funds are distributed based on risk and not politics. Few states suffered greater losses from the tragedies of 9/11 than New Jersey and the FBI has identified a two-mile stretch in New Jersey as the most at-risk for terrorism in the entire United States. Senator Frank Lautenberg is standing strong to bring more funding, tighten security and toughen standards to make New Jersey safer.

Senator Lautenberg's Record

Lautenberg Wrote the Law To Cut Off Foreign Aid to Countries that Sponsor Terrorism
Frank Lautenberg co-authored the law that bans foreign aid to countries that sponsor terrorism. And he is currently working to close a loophole that allows U.S. companies through foreign subsidies to do business with terror states like Iran.

Lautenberg brings risk-based Homeland Security Funding to NJ
Some of New Jersey’s most valuable assets are our ports – but they’re also what make New Jersey vulnerable to attack. So when President Bush distributed federal port security grants with little relation to risk or threat, Senator Lautenberg fought back. Senator Lautenberg’s amendment to the 2006 Homeland Security Appropriations bill changed the federal port security grants funding criteria. The result: the areas most at risk – including New Jersey – now get more funding.

Protecting New Jersey’s Chemical Security Law
New Jersey has the strongest chemical plant security laws in the nation … and Senator Lautenberg is working to make sure they stay strong. He wrote a law that blocked President Bush and chemical industry lobbyists from overriding NJ’s strong chemical security law. Senator Lautenberg wrote the first chemical security bill in 1999 and has been a tireless advocate ever since.

Lautenberg seeks justice for terrorist victims
American victims of terrorism were given strong, new rights by Senator Lautenberg’s law allowing them to collect legal judgments against foreign governments that sponsor terrorist acts. The law helped two New Jersey families recover damages from Iran. Lautenberg continues to put pressure on terrorist states by fighting for tougher sanctions and cutting off funding for countries such as Libya until they fully compensate American victims of terror.

Lautenberg stops terrorists from legally buying guns
When an investigation initiated by Senator Lautenberg revealed that suspected terrorists were able to purchase weapons in U.S. gun shops, he proposed a bill to close this glaring loophole in our gun laws. The gun lobby is currently fighting Senator Lautenberg’s common sense measure to prevent suspected terrorists from being able to purchase weapons at retail gun shops.
