Fighting Crime and Gun Violence

Senator Lautenberg has consistently stood up to the powerful gun lobby to enact sensible gun safety laws.

His landmark law preventing those convicted of domestic abuse from buying a gun has stopped 150,000 illegal gun purchases. His efforts to make it harder for criminals to access guns earned him a zero rating from the pro-gun lobby – a proud accomplishment. As leading gun control activist Sarah Brady said, “"Frank Lautenberg is a true leader in the fight for gun violence prevention. He understands that sensible gun laws save lives."

Senator Lautenberg's Record

Lautenberg: No guns for domestic abusers
Senator Lautenberg authored the law that prevents domestic abusers from buying a gun. Since the enactment of Senator Lautenberg’s law, over 150,000 attempted gun purchases by people with domestic abuse convictions have been blocked.

Lautenberg Fights to Require Background Checks at Gun Shows
Gun shows are the “Wild West” marketplace of the gun industry where convicted felons and the mentally ill can purchase weapons with no background check. Senator Lautenberg is the prime sponsor of legislation to close this dangerous loophole one and for all.

Lautenberg boosted community policing
Senator Lautenberg was instrumental in passing President Clinton’s COPS program, an initiative that lowered crime by putting an additional 100,000 police on the nation’s streets. Community policing initiatives have since been severely cut by the Bush Administration.

Lautenberg voted for ban on assault weapons
Senator Lautenberg pushed for a tougher, more comprehensive federal ban on assault weapons that President Bush and Washington Republicans allowed to expire. He also voted for the Assault Weapons ban and a ten-year prohibition on the sale of semi-automatic assault weapons.

Working to take “Cop Killer” handguns off our streets
The "Five-Seven" pistol fires bullets designed specifically to pierce bulletproof vests used by law enforcement. After law enforcement officials in New Jersey contacted the Senator with concerns about this weapon, Senator Lautenberg introduced Federal legislation to ban these deadly handguns.

Stopping suspected terrorists from buying guns
Just as Senator Lautenberg has stopped domestic abusers from being able to walk into any gun store in America and legally buy a weapon, he’s now pushing a bill that would stop people on the federal list of suspected terrorists from getting easy access to guns. It’s a piece of common sense legislation that will help keep us safer.
