ENVIRONMENT AND POLLUTION

Senator Lautenberg has been New Jersey’s strongest voice in protecting our shore and forcing polluters to pay to clean up their toxic messes. And now he’s standing up to the old energy special interests as a leader in moving our nation to a greener, less costly, more secure and stable energy future.

That’s why Senator Lautenberg has earned perfect scores from nationally recognized environmental groups. He has always stood up to the powerful to protect New Jersey’s most valuable environmental resources- and he always will.

Senator Lautenberg's Record

Lautenberg Law Will Increase Oil Tanker Safety and Prevent Spills
After a "single-hulled" oil tanker spilled hundreds of thousands of gallons of crude oil into the Delaware River in 2004, Senator Lautenberg changed federal law to force polluters who don’t switch to the stronger “double-hulled” tankers to pay three times the actual damages

Lautenberg: Polluters Not Taxpayers Should Pay for Cleanups
Senator Lautenberg is one of the champions of the Superfund program, which was designed to make sure polluters, not taxpayers, had to foot the bill for abandoned toxic sites. Unfortunately, President Bush has decimated the program’s budget and is starting to require everyday taxpayers to foot the bill. Senator Lautenberg is working to rebuild funding for the program with funds paid by polluters – not everyday taxpayers.

Lautenberg Challenges Bush on Global Warming
Senator Lautenberg tackle global warming by reducing U.S. emissions of greenhouse gases. Senator Lautenberg has also taken on President Bush’s manipulation of government scientists and successfully convinced the Inspectors General of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and NASA to launch an investigation into Administration censorship of government scientists.

Lautenberg Law Bolsters Chemical Safety
After President Bush attempted to nullify New Jersey’s chemical security laws, Senator Lautenberg wrote a Federal law that stopped Bush in his tracks. New Jersey has a right to protect its communities from deadly releases of dangerous chemicals, and Senator Lautenberg successfully protected that right.

Lautenberg "Right to Know" Bill
Senator Lautenberg authored the tough Toxic Right to Know Law requiring chemical facilities to disclose to local communities what toxic emissions they release into the environment. The reporting requirements help those living within communities that may be exposed, as well as those who work in the facilities.

Lautenberg BEACH Act keeps our swimmers safe
Senator Lautenberg’s BEACH Act requires tough new water quality standards for our nation’s beaches and strengthens the public’s right to know about water problems in beach areas. He recently introduced the Beach Protection Act in the Senate, which would expand the protections of the BEACH Act and do more to keep our beaches clean and preserve our shoreline.

Lautenberg law makes schools and our children safer
Keeping kids safe from harmful, cancer-causing substances, Senator Lautenberg wrote laws to help remove asbestos threats from our schools and environment. He also called upon the FDA and CDC to expand testing and monitoring of NJ children and families exposed to mercury, and introduced legislation to limit pesticide and harmful chemical use in school buildings and on school grounds.
