In May, the FBI arrested six men in Cherry Hill for a terrorist plot to attack Fort Dix and harm our troops.
Believe it or not, they actually bought their guns legally from a gun store.
Terrorists know it is easy it is to buy guns legally in our country. In December 2001, a terrorist training manual was found among the rubble in Afghanistan. It instructed terrorists living in the U.S. to "obtain an assault weapon legally."
The incredible fact is nothing in our gun laws prevents someone on the terrorist watch list from legally buying a firearm.
The idea that six years after 9/11 that we would leave this loophole in the law open is outrageous.
So, I’ve written a bill to stop known or suspected terrorists from being able to walk into any gun store in America and legally buy a gun. Today, when a background check is being run by a gun store owner, even if the attempted purchaser’s name comes up on the terrorist watch list, there’s nothing in our gun safety laws to prevent that terrorist from legally buying a weapon.
In 1996, we stood strong to prevent people convicted of domestic violence from getting guns. Since then, my law has kept 150,000 guns out of the hands of domestic abusers—keeping families and children safe.
We proved we could defeat the criminals and the gun lobby. Now we need to do everything we can to keep guns out of the hands of terrorists like those who wanted to attack Fort Dix.
