Reforming Washington, cutting waste and getting our fair share for NJ

I’m standing up for New Jersey and taking on one of the most outrageous examples of waste and misguided priorities in the federal government- and I need your help.

The current farm subsidy program embodies all that is wrong with Washington. Special interests receiving huge benefits while working families are left out... taxpayer dollars wasted on projects with little public purpose... regional politics trumping the national interest.

For too long taxpayers and family farmers in New Jersey and the rest of the nation have gotten a raw deal on the corporate welfare doled out to the huge agri-business special interests. In the past ten years just 6% of America’s farms have gotten 70% of the funds- $120 billion of your taxes. In 2005, New Jersey farmers got just 7 cents of every $100 in farm subsides.

I'm working to replace the old failed system with a new approach that helps family farmers like those in New Jersey and saves taxpayers billions.

The far-reaching reforms that Republican Senator Richard Lugar, a family farmer himself, and I propose would cost far less than the current system. Our legislation- the FRESH ACT - will provide a genuine safety net for small farmers while ending the taxpayer funded underwriting of massive agri-businesses regardless of whether they need the help, promote better environmental and land stewardship policies and actually provide $3 billion in savings to help pay down the federal deficit.

Our plan would also be fairer to farmers wherever they live- this new approach would be a big boost to the New Jersey agricultural community.

This effort has some powerful opponents- from the agri-business special interests to farm state Senators who want to preserve the status quo. But this is a fight for a fairer, fiscally responsible and environmentally smart future, and we won’t back down.

Please sign my petition to put pressure on every Member of Congress to support the FRESH legislation, end corporate welfare for giant agri-businesses, stand up for New Jersey’s family farmers and taxpayers and save taxpayers billions.
