When WWOR moved from New York City to New Jersey, the FCC's decision to grant their broadcasting license stated, "This station will not be a New Jersey station in name only. It will serve the people of New Jersey."
Yet WWOR has done the exact opposite.
Their website calls itself My9 New York and the station covers New York issues four times more frequently than those of New Jersey. Their focus on New Jersey issues is actually weaker than out-of-state stations. Something as simple as a search for the weather on their website gives you the forecast for Central Park in the middle of Manhattan.
That's wrong. And it's time for WWOR to live up to its promise.
New Jersey is the only state in the country without our own media market. There are enough viewers in New Jersey that we would be the fourth-largest media market in America if we weren't carved up between New York in the north and Philadelphia in the south.
A New Jersey station for New Jersey viewers isn't simply a convenience. Getting news, weather, traffic and programming to educate and inform New Jersey residents is essential.
I persuaded the FCC to hold WWOR's license renewal hearing in public - and in New Jersey. Frankly, this never happens.
So I'm asking you to build on this momentum and join my fight to get New Jersey the news, public affairs, cultural and sports coverage we deserve.
